AI Tech Pack Generators: What's Actually Production-Ready in 2026
The tech pack is the single most important document in physical product creation. And in 2026, the vast majority are still created in Microsoft Excel. Here's what production-ready actually means.
I have a confession. I'm about to write an article about the least glamorous document in the entire fashion industry.
Not the mood board. Not the campaign. Not the lookbook. The tech pack.
If you've never worked in manufacturing, you might not know what a tech pack is. Here's the short version: it's the blueprint that tells a factory how to make your product. Measurements. Materials. Construction methods. Stitching specifications. Hardware details. Colorway information. Sizing grading. Packaging instructions. Every single detail a factory needs to produce the exact product the designer intended, in the exact quality the brand requires.
Get the tech pack right, and production runs smoothly. Get it wrong, and you produce the wrong product. Miss a stitch specification, and the garment falls apart after three washes. Mis-specify a fabric weight, and the product doesn't drape the way the designer imagined. Write "blue" instead of specifying Pantone 19-4052 TCX, and the factory picks whatever blue they have in stock.

The Excel problem
I've spent ten years working with factories across China, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia. In that time, I've reviewed thousands of tech packs. The overwhelming majority arrive in one of three formats: an Excel spreadsheet with formatting that breaks when you open it on a different version, a PDF exported from that Excel spreadsheet, or a Google Sheet with seventeen tabs.
This isn't an exaggeration. The document that determines whether a $50 shoe or a $200 jacket is manufactured correctly is built with the same tool your accounting department uses for expense reports.
The result is predictable. Technical designers spend hours — in some cases, full working days — manually entering measurements into cells. They copy-paste construction notes. They insert product images as floating objects that shift position every time someone opens the file. They create materials lists with no connection to actual supplier databases. They share the tech pack by email, and the factory opens it on a computer with different display settings, and the formatting breaks, and a phone call happens to clarify what the tech pack actually meant.
Every factory owner I've spoken to has a version of the same story: "We received a tech pack that said the stitching was 'standard.' What does 'standard' mean? Which stitch type? How many stitches per inch? We called the brand. They didn't know. They said to use whatever we thought was right. We guessed. The sample came back wrong."
This is the foundational failure mode of product creation. Not bad design. Not bad manufacturing. Bad information transfer.
What the market offers today
A wave of AI tools have entered the "tech pack" conversation over the past 18 months. Most of them do one of the following:
Template generation
These tools provide digital templates for tech packs, making it easier to structure the information. This is helpful — it's better than a blank Excel sheet — but it doesn't actually generate the content. You still type every measurement and material by hand.
Measurement extraction
Some tools can analyze a product image and suggest measurements. This is genuinely useful for getting an approximate starting point, but the measurements often lack the precision required for production.
Spec sheet formatting
Tools that take your existing data and format it into a professional-looking document. Again, helpful for presentation, but the hard work — actually creating the specifications — is still on the human.
What none of these tools do is understand the product.
What "production-ready" actually means
Here's my checklist for a genuinely production-ready AI tech pack system:
- ·Design-connected: The tech pack should be generated from the design, not alongside it.
- ·Measurement accuracy: For apparel, within 0.5cm tolerance. For footwear, within 2mm.
- ·Material specification depth: Fabric composition, color reference, finish, and supplier information.
- ·Construction notes: Stitch types, stitches per inch, seam allowances, attachment methods.
- ·Multi-region costing: FOB costing alongside the tech pack for informed sourcing decisions.
- ·Pattern extraction: Production-ready files for prints, embroidery, and heat transfers.
No existing standalone tool meets all six of these requirements. The reason is architectural: a tool that generates tech packs in isolation can't know what the designer intended, can't access manufacturing databases, and can't extract patterns from the design context.
The integrated approach
